The UK Student visa is for international students aged 16 or over who've been accepted onto a course at a licensed UK institution. It's a points-based route built around your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
The 70-point system
50 points — Your CAS
A unique reference number issued by your university once you accept an unconditional offer. You cannot apply without one.
10 points — Finances
Proof you can cover tuition and living costs — 28 days of bank statements, held in your name (or a sponsor's) before applying.
10 points — English language
Usually proven through an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), unless your course provider or nationality exempts you.
Costs to plan for
Visa fee (roughly £490–£558 depending on route) plus the Immigration Health Surcharge — currently around £776 per year of study.
Documents you'll typically need
- Valid passport and your CAS reference number
- 28 days of bank statements or a financial sponsor letter
- English test results (unless exempt)
- Academic transcripts and certificates
- ATAS certificate (only for certain sensitive STEM subjects)
- Parental consent letter, if you're under 18
